Construction of Olympic Venues
«Iceberg» Skating Palace
Brief information on the venue:
- Area of the construction site: 11.42 ha
- Height of the building: over 34 m
- The Iceberg Winter Palace is intended for figure skating and short track speed skating.
- When the first cubic meter of concrete was poured in, into the palace's foundations there was also inserted a time-capsule.
- In the foundations for the "Iceberg" 2280 piles were driven.
- Less than a month was required to construct the foundation slap, which has an area of 20,500 sq. m.
- For the foundations, over 18,000 cubic meters of concrete and 1,943 tonnes of armatures were required.
- Over 500 tonnes of high-density bolts were used in the construction process.
- To put the venue up, 15 thousand tonnes of metal structures were required – the equivalent of two Eiffel Towers.
- A giant covering rises over the bowl of the stadium at a height of over 30 m. The roof has a wave-like shape around its perimeter, and goes very well with the facade, which is reminiscent of an iceberg floating in the sea.
- The name of the venue is international, as it sounds the same in the Russian, English and German languages.
